Recommended Skywarn Net Script

Opening the Net

“Attention, all stations. This is [Your Callsign] in [Your Location] calling the Manitowoc County Skywarn Net.  The purpose of this net is to relay reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service in Green Bay and to share information about the changing weather situation. The current situation is as follows:”

[Provide a Brief Overview of the Situation]

“I will now pause for any emergency traffic, this is [Your Callsign], Net Control.”

[Pause for Emergency Traffic]

“This is [Your Callsign], Net Control.  As a reminder, this net only accepts severe weather reports that meet National Weather Service reporting criteria, including tornadoes, funnel clouds, rotating wall clouds, hail, damaging winds, and flooding. In addition, this net does not dispatch mobile spotters, but will accept reports from those operating in their vehicles.  Mobile stations are required to give an updated location each time they report severe weather.  All participating stations must notify the Net Control if they leave the frequency.”

“This is [Your Callsign], Net Control. I will now standby for any trained spotters on frequency wishing to check into this net for the purpose of reporting severe weather from their location.  Participating spotters please check into the net listing your callsign, location, and your status as either fixed or mobile.  Please break your transmission after calling Net Control to ensure you are not doubling with another station, please call [Your Callsign], Net Control, at this time”.

[Pause and Log All Stations Checking Into the Net]

“Do I have any stations on frequency that are willing to serve as a Liaison to WX9GRB at the National Weather Service in Green Bay, please call [Your Callsign], Net Control, at this time.”

[Pause for Volunteers, Repeat as Needed, and Provide Net Details to the Liaison Once Assigned]

“Do I have any additional stations on frequency wishing to check into the Manitowoc County Skywarn Net, please call [Your Callsign], Net Control, and list your callsign, location, and your status as either fixed or mobile.”

[Pause and Log All Stations Checking Into the Net]

[Contact an EC or AEC to Initiate a CallingPost Callout, if necessary]

Net in Progress (Every 10 Minutes or As Needed)

“This is [Your Callsign], Net Control for the Manitowoc County Skywarn Net.  The current weather situation is as follows:”

[Provide a Brief Overview of the Situation]

“Do I have any stations with reportable severe weather, please call [Your Callsign], Net Control at this time.”

“Do I have any additional trained spotters that would like to participate in this net, please call [Your Callsign], Net Control at this time.”

Station Status Checks (Every 30 Minutes or As Needed)

“This is [Your Callsign], Net Control for the Manitowoc County Skywarn Net.  I will now check the status of all stations participating in the net.  When called, please respond with your callsign and the words “on-frequency.” 

[Call Each Participating Station Individually]

(If a station does not respond, attempt to call the station again after a few minutes and attempt to make phone contact.  Take appropriate actions to ensure the station’s welfare.)

Closing the Net (When Allowed by WX9GRB)

“This is [Your Callsign], Net Control Station for the Manitowoc County Skywarn Net.  We have been given permission by the National Weather Service to close this net.  I will now call all participating stations to confirm receipt of this message.”

[Call Each Participating Station Individually]

[Ask the Liaison to Pass the Spotter Total (fixed and mobile) to WX9GRB]

“This concludes the net.  I will now turn the repeater back over to normal amateur use.  This is [Your Callsign].”
